Disease decimated the Aztecs
Explanation:
- In February 1519, five hundred years ago, the Spaniard Hernán Cortés left Cuba in order to conquer the Mexican interior and colonise the Aztec empire. Aztec emperor Montezuma died within only two years, the capital Tenochtitlan city was captured and Cortés had demanded the kingdom of the Aztecs for Spain. Spanish weapons and tactics have played a part, but epidemics of European diseases had caused much damage.
- While he was a "skilled leader" Cortes couldn't have surmounted a city of 200000 without assistance, together with his force maybe of 1000 Spaniards & indigenous allies. It was a smallpox outbreak, spreading steadily from the "Mexican coast & decimated" the population of the Tenochtitlan city in the year 1520, & reduced its populace by 40 per cent in one year.
