The border states included Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri etc. They were mostly slave states. They were important to the North during the Civil war because of their geographical positions and vast mineral resources and agricultural production. More importantly if they had joined the Confederacy, it was not possible for the North to win the war.
The border states gave the North the advantage in troops, resources and money. The importance of border states can be gauged from the statement of Abraham Lincoln "I hope to have God on my side, but I must have Kentucky." It were these states which played an important role in winning the victory of the North/Union.
