British followed a policy of aggression after the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. They targeted the Sikh regimental panchayats and declared it as a dangerous form of military democracy. The British started a military cantonment in Ferozepur and annexed Sindh territory in south of Punjab. This was a reason for public outrage in Punjab and led to the 1st Anglo-Sikh war.
