Why were the eurpean trading companies trying to eliminate each other

This was because a lot of companies from various contries had established their trading companies in india to trade and some of them were of countries like france, portugal ,britain etc.And they all were trying to create a monoply in indian market and this could on;ly happen if they elimnated each other .So each company started to elimnate each other and in this way the East india company of britain was able to create a monoply in indian market.
