Answer:

The Kings of Europe were in a situation of constant tension, there right to rule came solely from their birth and divine right. Now divine right only works on peasants who wholeheartedly believe that God choose the king to rule them. However the nobility was a completely different matter. They would only follow the King so long as it benefited themselves, that and peasants would eventually rebel if they began to see the truth of their situation on how the nobility and King hoarded all the wealth. So kings thought of a way they could keep the nobles happy and the peasant distracted and war just so happened to be the best solution. This is why in history we see a pattern of the best known Kings are not those who created better situations for the peasants , or created a more just kingdom, but instead those who won the most battles, controlled the most land, held the best riches. This is what all kings wanted in wartime the peasants would be busy with the war, and the plunder collected from the war would satisfy the nobles greed. Also the Kings own treasury and land, thus also their prestige would increase with each battle won. This is why the most successful kings where those who either found great success in battle or in limiting the nobles power and making the peasants lives better.
