The Cromwellian conquest of Ireland didn't follow the norm for European wars at that time. Cromwell despised both the Irish and Catholics--he went beyond the usual religious differences. His tactics were considered brutal even then. As a point of comparison, one of Napoleon's brothers compared him to Napoleon--Napoleon never forgave him for that insult.
