HEYA........

Very nice question there!

My answer is going to be a bit long, so I request all the Indians to read this very carefully and read the full content.

Bengal, though located in the Eastern part of India, is called as West Bengal. This has a long history...

Previously, (before 1905) Bengal was a huge province. It comprised parts of (current) West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, and Chota Nagpur Plateau, and parts of Assam. The then Viceroy, Lord Curzon partitioned Bengal in 1905.

He gave the following reasons:

Bengal was a huge province for one government to administer properly, hence Bengal was divided to:

=> Reduce size of the Province
=> Reduce population of the Province

TO MAKE ADMINISTRATION BETTER.

However, the Indian nationalists were of different views. According to them, Curzon divided Bengal:

=> To strike at the roots of Bengali Nationalism (because at that time, Bengal was the nerve-centre of Indian nationalism).
=> To drive a wedge between the Hindus and the Muslims (also by following the policy of Divide and Rule).
=> To demonstrate the power of British Raj (Curzon wanted to show the Indians that the British could do what they wanted).

Bengal was partitioned in 1905. Again, some forty years later, in 1947, India got partitioned. The Muslims demanded a separate country for them with a separate Constitution. They wanted PAKISTAN. PAKISTAN was to be composed of the Muslim Majority Regions of India, hence Muhammad Ali Jinnah proposed the following states to be included in Pakistan:

=> Punjab
=> Afghanisthan (NWFP or North-West Frontier Province)
=> Kashmir
=> Sindh
=> BaluchisTAN

The name Pakistan came from the letters of the above places.

Now, the Eastern part of Bengal was also a Muslim-majority region, so the Muslims demanded for that place also. Previously, the Britishers thought that partition of India was impossible because the places Pakistan wanted, had a gap of more than 700 miles. So, communication between them depended on the goodwill of India.

However, later, India divided. The Western part of India (now known as Pakistan) became West-Pakistan and the Eastern part (now Bangladesh), at that time became East-Pakistan. Now, West Pakistan was dominant over East Pakistan. The Muslims who lived in East Pakistan spoke in Bengali language (better known as BANGLA), whereas the Muslims in West Pakistan spoke in Urdu.

So, there was a conflict between the two, regarding which language was going to be the official language of Pakistan
. Since West Pakistan was dominant, at last, Urdu became the official language. But, this was injustice to the people living in East Pakistan.

West Pakistan also did many more injustice to the East Pakistanis, just because they spoke Bengali. Mujibur Rahaman, a staunch Bengali nationalist, tried hard to rise the language Bangla. The West Pakistanis, to take revenge, killed all his family members including him one day....

Then came the War of 1971 (India vs Pakistan War). Many East Pakistanis joined India so that they may get rid of people of West Pakistan. People living in Dhaka came to Kolkata. The Indian Government took the whole responsibility to provide them with food, water and shelter.

After the War, when India won, India freed East Pakistan from West Pakistan. East Pakistan then came to be known as Bangladesh. Thus, there became two Bangla speaking regions -- One, Bengal in India and other, the whole of Bangladesh.

Now, since Bengal in India is west to that of Bangladesh, Bangladesh came to be known as East Bengal and Bengal (in India) came to be known as West Bengal.

Answer:

read the answer carefully..

Explanation:

In 1905, Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, partitioned Bengal into West Bengal

and East Bengal. East Bengal was merged with Assam. The reason given was administrative

necessity, but Curzon wanted Bihar and Orissa to be separated and made it into new

provinces. West Bengal was a Hindu-majority province and East Bengal was a Muslim-

dominated province. The main motive was to curtail the influence of nationalism on Indians

and divide the Hindus and Muslims.

* This step was taken against the wishes of the people. The partition led to a mass upsurge.

British goods were boycotted and Swadeshi goods were used. The students boycotted schools

and colleges and joined the anti-partition agitation. The leaders launched the Swadeshi and

Boycott Movements and encouraged the ideas of self-help, Swadeshi enterprise and national

education. The Congress adopted the goal of Swaraj in 1906 at its Calcutta Session.
