why white phosphorus has to be kept in water?

White Phosphorus has very low ignition temperature which is approximately 35 degree Celsius and that is why it is kept in water. so that it remains isolated

it has to be kept in water as it is dangerously reactive in airand it should be handled with forceps.if it comes in contact with skin it may result in severe burns
