Since ancient time aati pratha was prevalent in the society. It was an illegal practice of burning the wife on her husband's pyre. Old Hindu scripts 'Agni purana' also mentions about this practice which was known as sahagmana at that time, but was prevailing only among a certain section of the society. Only Ragout women were forced to embrace aati. The practice of aati was more acute in Bengal, wherein 1828,more than 450 incident of aati was recorded. So the practice of sati was considered very bad in 19th century.
