Why will each gamete contain only one gene set ?

Every gamete has one gene set(Haploid) due to meiotic division. This reduces the chromosome number to half.This is necessary as two types of gamete fuses during sexual reproduction to form diploid(two sets of chromosomes) Zygote and thus maintaining the chromosome number in offspring.

The genes controlling a character separate from each other during gamete formation. Hence gamete is always pure as far as contrasting characters are considered and will possess only one gene set
