In Ethan-1-al, the carbon of methyl group is the alpha-carbon since the functional group -CHO is directly bonded to it. But in formaldehyde( Methanal ) there is no alpha-carbon. Hence, it doesn't possess an alpha-hydrogen.

Utsavsterbon: why no alpha carbon in Methanal
Anonymous: Because, there is no carbon attached to CHO.
Utsavsterbon: ohk...so if there is no carbon attached to a functional group then no alpha hydrogen!!
Anonymous: Yes. :-)
Utsavsterbon: hm...thanks again
Anonymous: You're welcome, again :-)
