Why would CH₃COH give α-hydrogen, but HCOH will not?

In Ethan-1-al, the carbon of methyl group is the alpha-carbon since the functional group -CHO is directly bonded to it. But in formaldehyde( Methanal ) there is no alpha-carbon. Hence, it doesn't possess an alpha-hydrogen.
