Why zinc is reacted with acid in laboratory preparation but not alkali as zinc is amphoteric in nature?

The reaction between zinc and hydrochloric acid is Zn + HCl = H2 + ZnCl2. It is a single replacement reaction where zinc metal displaces the hydrogen to form hydrogen gas and zinc chloride, a salt.

You are right but what happens of make zinc react with alkali. It will also produce hydrogen then in laboratory preparation why we use acid not alkali
