Why zinc reacts with both acids and bases?

Zinc is most reactive element as well as an amphoteric metal , therefore it reacts with both acids and bases

Answer: Metal oxides are usually basic and they react with acids to form their respective salts. But amphoteric oxides react with both acids and alkalis to form salts. ZnO reacts with hydrochloric acid forming zinc chloride and water.
