Why Zn is used in Ozonolysis reaction!?

Explanation:

It is not necessary to use Zn only we can use H2O2 also (Hydrogen peroxide). H2O2 is cheaper than Zn.

Secondary reason for using Zn is its valency is 2 and by removing Oxygen from ozonide. The product then is aldehyde or ketone etc depend upon the compound.

Hey there!_

▶Zn is used a reducing agent in ozonolysis reaction.

▶In the last step of the reaction(refer attachment), Hydrogen peroxide is formed, which oxidises aldehyde,ketones to carboxylic acid and then to Carbon dioxide and water. So , to prevent the formation of carboxylic acids, Zn is used which reduces H2O2 to zinc oxide and water.

▶Some other reagents which performs the same function as Zn are DMSO(Dimethyl sulpho oxide),LiAlH4.. etc.
