The real problem is that a theory of everything may simply be impossible to identify. When string theory became popular in the 1980s, there were actually five different versions of it. ... M-theory also only needs 11 dimensions, which is at least better than 26. But M-theory doesn't offer a single theory of everything.

Present status. At present, there is no candidate theory of everything that includes the standard model of particle physics and general relativity and that, at the same time, is able to calculate the fine-structure constant or the mass of the electron.
