The winds get deflected from their normal path due to the Coriolis Force or in other words the Coriolis Effect. The winds in the Northern hemisphere gets deflected towards the left and that in the Southern Hemisphere gets deflectedtowards the right. The Coriolis effect is caused by the rotation of the earth.
