"The Trees" is a nature poem by Adrienne Rich. Forests provide the natural habitat for plants, birds and insects. The natural equilibrium is disrupted in the absence of trees in the forest. The poetess personified nature in this poem. In the four walls, man has contained nature. Man has planted the trees in the artificial glasshouses of modern times. Nature, however, can not be long suppressed. Artificial bathers are battling for the leaves. They are free to sever all bondages and move to their natural living place— to the forest. They can only expand there to the natural immensity, grandeur and dimensions. The poetess is trying to express the need for equality, like human beings. When you are in the forest and not in artificial houses made of humans, you will achieve your natural growth and independence.
