“With a woeful ballad”- explanation of phrase with reference to the poem “The seven Ages”:

The poem seven ages is written by William Shakespeare which appears in his play called “As you like it”. In this poem he describes the seven stages in man’s life which starts form childhood and ends in Old age.

In third stage of man’s life he becomes as a lover during the time in which he does the activities to impress and gain attention of his beloved. During this stage he experiences both happiness as well as sorrow. This feel is explained by Shakespeare as “with a woeful ballad” which means very sad songs or ballads expressing his sorrow.
