⚜ This is quite strange fact, But true!! Although, being an old but richest Civilization of the world, Indus Valley Civilization is still famous for its urban planning. Th grid like colonies, the well developed drainage system and many more architectures explains the above statement well.

Great Bath:-

  • It is the remarkable and an important structure of Indus valley cities.
  • The tank is the mains structure which is approximately 12 m long and 7 m wide with a depth of 3 m.
  • It had two entrances from two sides-
  1. There was a staircase from north side.
  2. And, Another staircase from south side.
  • The tank was made leakproof. It was plastered with gypsum to make it watertight such that water don't leak.
  • Only Bitumen was laid all on the sides to ensure more safety from leakage of water.
  • There was porticos all around the bath. The staircase, as I said before leads to the upper storey.

Drainage system:-

  • This was also a impressive feature leading to well developed drainage system.
  • All the houses have their own bathroom which was paved with bricks.
  • The drains are connected together to the street drains which were equipped with manholes.
  • Hence, We can say that the civil administration and architectural planning of the cities were very advanced.
  • Also, It shows that people of Indus valley had paid proper attention to health, hygeine and sanitation.

☃️ (a)The Great Bath

  • The most imposing structure that was unearthed at Mohenjo-daro was The Great Bath.

  • It consisted of an open quadrangle within verandahs on it four sides, and at the back of the three verandahs various galleries and rooms.

  • There was a large swimming enclosure in the centre of the quadrangle.

  • At the either end there was a raised platform with the flight of steps, leading down to the pool and that pool was filled with water, taken from a nearby well.

  • After the periodic cleaning of the pool, the water was discharged into a huge drain connected to the main drain on the street.

  • The walls of the pool were made watertight, using specially-made bricks and gypsum mortar.

☃️ (b)The Drainage System

  • One of the marvellous features of the City was its elaborate drainage system.

  • A brick-lined drainage channel flowed alongside every street.

  • The house drains were connected to the underground main drains.

  • The drains were provided with a manholes at regular intervals for proper examination and cleaning of drains.

  • This shows that the people paid great attention to sanitation and health.

  • Sir John Hubert Marshall led an excavation campaign, during which he discovered the ruins of the city Harappa.

  • The structure reveals the architectural skill of the people, as it is strongly withstood the ravages of the forces of nature for nearly 5,000 years.
