The third level is everything that happened purely in Charlie's mind.

Step by step explanation:

  • The Third level is a bitter truth of wars. How they have affected people and their state of mind, people are left with insecurities. Also, how a modern man tend to escape reality because of the problems in his life.
  • The story is about a man, Charley, who is facing a mental health problem. While coming to home after work, Charley discovers the third level of the grand central station. But the station has only two levels. He narrates the whole story of time travelling to his psychiatrist friend Sam. Later Charley discovers a letter from Sam, written in past and urging him and his wife to look for him.
  • The letter wrote by Sam was rather strange. Back then, people used to send mails with a cover and a blank page inside. Firstly, the cover had a letter but no blank page in it. Secondly, the letter had a date of 18 July, 1894 when Sam, the psychiatrist and the writer of the letter did not exist. Both Charley and Sam existed in present times.
  • Charley was suffering hallucinations that made him to think that whatever is happening is for real. It was all a part of Charley's imagination.

Hence, everything that happened purely in Charley's mind.
