Answer:

n (ri) = 1/1.54. Refractive Index Of Rock Salt With Respect To Ice = 1/1.54 ≈ 0.65

Let the Ref. Indices of ice and air be n(i) and n(a) respectively. And that of Rock Salt be n(r).

Given :- n(i w.r.t a ) = 1.31 => n(i) / n(a) = 1.31.

n(a) = 1

:. n(i) = 1.31

Given :- n(i w.r.t r) = 1.54 => n(i) / n(r) = 1.54

=> 1.31/ n(r) = 1.54

:. n(r) = 1.31/1.54 ≈ 0.85

Now, n(r w.r.t i) = 0.85/ 1.31 ≈0.65

The refractive index of rock salt with respect of ice is 1.176

Given:

Refractive index of ice = Ri = 1.31

Refractive index of rock salt = RR = 1.54

To find:

Refractive index of rock salt with respect of ice = ?

Formula used:

\bold{RRI=\frac{RR}{RI}}

Solution:

Refractive index gives the value of the velocity of light in respective material. In this question, the velocity of the light in rock salt is found with respect to the velocity of the ice.

It has no units.

On substituting given values in the formula, we get,

\bold{RRI=\frac{1.54}{1.31}}

\bold{\therefore RRI=1.176}
