Electrolytic refining of copper is done in the following manner.

A cathode made up of a strip of pure copper is connected externally to a battery which is connected to the anode that is made up of an impure strip of copper. The electrodes are then immersed into a Copper sulphate solution. When electricity passes through them:

Impure copper from the anode dissolves and goes into the copper sulphate solution; pure copper from the solution gets deposited on the cathode. The insoluble impurities settle down at anode, called “anode mud”.
