Take a glass beaker fix two electrodes. The positive electrode acts as anode &negative electrode act as cathode. Fill 1/3 of beaker with water. Take two test tubes. Insert on electrodes. Observe the level of water in the test tubes. Connect the electrodes to a battery. Pass the electricity for a period of time. Later switch off the current and observe the level of water in test tubes. The level of water in the test tubes is decreased. The free space in the test tubes is filled with H2 & O2 gases. Oxygen gas is evolved at anode and hydrogen gas released at cathode.

Electrolysis of water

Explanation:

The decomposition of water into oxygen and hydrogen when electric current is passed through it is called electrolytic decomposition of water.

For electrolysis we take water in a beaker and insert two stainless steel electrodes into it. When we pass the current through the electrodes the hydrogen atoms will appear at the negatively charged electrode (cathode) and oxygen atom will appear at positively charged electrode (Anode). The amount of hydrogen deposited at cathode  is twice the amount of oxygen deposited at anode, both the elements are in form of a bubble.

Above is the simple method for the electrolytic decomposition of water.
