To find: a numerical expression for \mathrm{18} operated by mathematical operations using four \mathrm{4s}.

Solution.

We must know that, cube root of \mathrm{8} is \mathrm{2}.

How?

\quad\mathrm{\sqrt[3]{8}}

=\mathrm{\sqrt[3]{2^{3}}}

=\mathrm{(2^{3})^{1/3}}

=\mathrm{2^{3/3}}

=\mathrm{2}

\Rightarrow \mathrm{\sqrt[3]{8}=2\quad.....(1)}

DMAS is essential here:

\quadD = division, M = Multiplication,

\quadA = Addition, S = Subtraction

Now,

\quad \mathrm{4\times 4+\sqrt[3]{4+4}}

=\mathrm{4\times 4+\sqrt[3]{8}}

=\mathrm{4\times 4+2\quad[by\:(1)]}

=\mathrm{16+2\quad[Using\:DMAS]}

=\mathrm{18}

\Rightarrow \boxed{\quad\mathrm{4\times 4+\sqrt[3]{4+4}=18}\quad}

This is the required expression.

Given :  4 times  4

To find : using mathematical operations  to get 18

Solution:

There can be many solution to such problem

4  * √4  * √4   + √4

= 4 * 2 * 2   + 2

= 16 + 2

= 18

or

4  × 4  +  4/√4

= 16 +  4/2

= 16 + 2

= 18

or

4 * 4   +  ∛(4 + 4)

= 16 + ∛8

= 16 + 2

= 18

or

4^{\sqrt{4} } +  \frac{4}{\sqrt{4}}

= 4²  +  4/2

= 16 + 2

= 18

and can be many more such solutions
