the experience and qualifications that a person earns during his/her lifetime are example of acquired traits. They are due to change in lifestyle, injury, loss of body parts etc. These traits cannot be inherited. Only the changes in the genetic material of the reproductive cells can be inherited.
e.g. 1. muscles developed by strenuous exercise cannot be inherited to offspring as these changes occur in somatic cells ( changes in the somatic cells are not passes onto the next generation). These are called as acquired traits.
2. if a person read books, the knowledge he earns by reading the book does not make any change in the gene, hence this knowledge will not get automatically transmitted to his generation.

hope it helps you..

  • There are certain traits which are developed during the lifetime of an individual. For example, many people get their gall bladder removed by surgery due to certain complications. But the children of these people are born with gall bladder. Thus, this trait is not passed on from one generation to the next generation. Traits whose characteristics are not genetically controlled and cannot be passed on from one generation to the next generation are called acquired traits.
