Since we are ask to prove that 17 is a factor of 17017 without actual division so we have to know the rule of divisibility of 17.

I am the rules states that we have to subtract 5 times the last digit from the remaining truncated portion of the actual number. After subtraction if the result is divisible by 17 that proves that the original number is divisible by 17 as well.

For example we have to subtract 5 x 7 from 1701 i.e. 1701-35 = 1666.

And 1666 is divisible by 17. 1666/17 = 98

17017=17000+17

=17*10000+17

=17(10000+1)

17*10001

This shows 17 is a factor of 17*10001

17 is a factor of 17*10001
