The generator is just converting ENERGY into another form. Meaning if there is no source there is no power output. Inphysics, energy is a property ofobjects which can be transferred to other objects or converted into different forms but never created or destroyed. The rotating engine we call the prime mover of the generator needs energy to rotate in order to convert the energy into electricity. That energy can be in several form such as fossil fuel, running water, wind, nuclear fusion, heat and what have you.
