Nationalism refers to the feeling if oneness and common consciousness that emerges out when people living in the same territory share the same historical ,political and cultural background have the same language and consider themselves as one nation.

 \bold {CAUSES \: FOR \: RISE \: OF \: NATIONALISM }

⚫ECONOMIC EXPLOITATION

▶The peasants

They were the main victims of British colonial policies. The government took away a large part of their produce in the form land revenue and other taxes. These exorbitant led the peasants into the clutches of landlords and moneylenders.

▶The artisans and Craftsman

The British economic polices were against the interest of Indian trade and industry .

▶The working Class

The growth of modern industries led TV the birth of a new social Class in India - working Class. They were exploited by factory owners.

▶The Educated Indians

The only employment available to the educated Indians was government service in which the competion was high and the chances of promotion were bleak.

⚫REPRESSIVE COLONIAL POLICIES

▶Lord lyton organised a Grand Delhi Durbar in 1877 to proclaim Queen Victoria as Empress of India.Lakhs of money was spent in this while they did nothing to save people from grip of famines.

▶Lord lytton introduced the vernacular press act (1878 ) and Indian arm act(1878).

▶The maximum age limit for Indian Civil service exam was reduced from 21-19, which maked it difficult for Indians to complete it.

▶Sir C. P Ilbert prepared a bill known as Ilbert bill in 1883 .The bill sougth to abolish racial discrimination while British took it as harm to their special privileges and denied it.

⚫SOCIAL RELIGIOUS CAUSES.

▶In social sphere, there was need to abolish caste system, child marriage, downry system, purdah system Sati and infanticide.

▶In religious sphere there was need to return combat religious beliefs, superstitions, attack idolatry, polytheism and heredity priesthood.

ALL THESE FACTORS LED TO THE RISE OF NATIONALISM IN EARLY 19s.
