Wood is definitely a non-metal. It is composed of mixture of complex molecules. Wood is non-metal. ... Metals are malleable, ductile, sonorous, good conductors of heat and electricity.other than solidity wood does not have have any of these properties and hence it is not a metal.

Hope it helps..

IS WOOD A METAL OR NONMETAL??

Answer:

Wood is a mixture of non-metals

Explanation:

The question rightly should be:

Does wood has metallic or non metallic character?

Let start its understanding from the classification of matter.

We all know chemically matter is classified into

(i) Elements (ii) Compounds and (iii) mixtures.

Elements are made of one kind of atoms ------ (1)

Compounds are made of one kind of molecules or formula units.

When two or more substances mix with each other it results in the formation of a Mixture (2)

Elements are further classified into metals, nonmetals, noble gases, and metalloids------ (3)

Among 118 elements which are identified by now, 94 occur naturally on the earth and 24 are synthetic or man-made elements.

There are only 17 Nonmetals, among which 6 non-metals are categorized as Noble gases------ (4)

From statements (1) and (3) it is clear that

(i) A METAL should Be an ELEMENT.

(ii) A NONMETAL should Be an ELEMENT --------- (5)

(iii) A NOBLE GAS should Be an ELEMENT.

(iv) A METALLOID should Be an ELEMENT.

Further all elements find their position in the periodic table. ------ (6)

From (1) and (5), it is clear that:

A Nonmetal is (i) an element and (ii) is made ONE KIND of atoms ------- (7)

Let come back to Wood …..

Wood is composed of a number of compounds such as lignin, cellulose, water, hemicellulose, etc.

The relative composition of wood varies from plant to plant. Unlike a compound, wood does not have a fixed chemical formula.

Hence, wood is a mixture (see statement (2) ).

Wood is neither compound  nor an element ------------(8)

• Comparing (8) with (5), it is clear that

wood is not an element and therefore not a nonmetal.

We can rightly say,

Wood is a mixture of nonmetals, but wood individually is not considered as a nonmetal.

Further, all elements (metals, nonmetals, metalloids, and noble gases) find their position in the periodic table directly or indirectly.

Wood is not included in the periodic table.

Also there are only 17 nonmetals existing in nature, wood is not included in this list.

How should we understand this question rightly?

Does wood has non metallic character?

Then we can say YES…

But if the question is:

Is wood a nonmetal or metal?

Then our answer should be, No.

As it is a mixture, it can be neither a metal nor nonmetal.

Since, it is composed of many non-metals, you can say it is MIXTURE OF NON-METALS.
