Fundamentally, vapor-compression refrigeration consists of a heat engine that runs backwards, so that the heat energy is obtained from a cold reservoir and deposited into a hot reservoir. On the basis of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, the heat energy does not conduct this transfer spontaneously from a cold reservoir to a hot reservoir.
