work out the value of 16 + 5 ÷ 2 - 1
Re-write the statement 16 + 5 ÷ 2 - 1 by including one pair of brackets to make the total value equal to 21.
Re-write the statement 16 + 5 ÷ 2 - 1 + 6 by including two pairs of brackets to make the total value equal to 3.

If we start solving this,

16 + 5 ÷ 2 - 1

16 + 2.5 - 1

18.5 - 1

17.5

Now we will rewrite it to make the total value equal to 21

16 + 5 ÷ (2 - 1)

21 ÷ (1)

21

Now we will rewrite it to make the total value equal to 3

(16 + 5) ÷ (2 - 1 + 6)

(21) ÷ (7)

This is just playing with brackets in Mathematics.

We should always follow rule of BODMAS

B = Brackets

O = Of

D = Division

M = Multiplication

A = Addition

S = Subtraction

Since , there were no brackets we were using DMAS and as brackets came we used BODMAS.
