Electropower

An electroscope is a device that detects static electricity using thin metal or plastic leaves, which are different when charged.

An object with a suspicious static electrical charge is brought to the ball of metal plate or electroscope. Electrical charge goes to metal and foil leaves below, which retract one another. Since each card has the same charge (positive or negative), they leave one another behind.

Electroscope: Electroscope is used to detect and measure electrical charges.

Working of an Electroscope:

• In a discharge electroscope, the leaves hang down directly.

• When a charge object touches the metal knob, the electric charge travels between the rod and the leaves.

• The leaves spread separately, which indicate the presence of electrical charges.

• Since the charge on both leaves is the same, the leaves retreat and spread each other.

Construction of an electroscope:

An electroscope has a metal stick with a knob at the top and there is a pair of thin metal leaves below. The rod is inserted into a hole in the rubber stopper which fits in the flask. In the flask is the lower part of the rod and metal leaves.
