It was in the year 1643, when Torricelli designed a simple barometer which used mercury as it's barometric liquid.
Consider the diagram before beginning to read the following:
If the atmospheric pressure increases, the pressure at point C increases and mercury from trough flows into the tube, hence leading to an increase in vertical height of mercury column in the tube because it tends to equalize and balance the pressure at point A and C. Similarly, when the atmospheric pressure decreases, the vertical height of mercury column from the surface of mercury in trough to the level in the tube decreases to balance it. Therefore, the vertical height of mercury column from the mercury surface in the trough to the level in the, is a measure of of the atmospheric pressure.
