Detergents have a bunch of molecules which have both a side that ‘likes’ water and a side that ‘likes’ oils. It turns out that if you dump enough detergent into water, the side that ‘likes’ oil comes together and forms tiny little balls (called micelles) which have the water-loving part sticking out.
