Answer:

It depends upon the slave, the master, the conditions of the slavery and the general environment in which the slave lives, works, plays, raises a family and dies. Slaves in the USA had it better than in other nations, for a variety of reasons. On the plantation, contrary to abolitionist and neo-abolitionist beliefs, some slaves had a double sense of belonging, stemming from their place in the plantation community and their master actually owning them.

More skilled and intelligent slaves felt the worst about slavery, because they knew it limited their opportunities. Less skilled and intelligent slaves were more likely to live at the same level they would eventually attain as free people.

Young slave children often did not realize they were slaves and usually lived carefree childhoods.

Those who were owned by alcoholic, insane and cruel masters or who suffered the loss of family members through sales felt terrible about being slaves.
