Microorganisms are very useful as:
1. DECOMPOSITION: help degrade dead animals and plants and bring valuable nutrients back to Earth.
2. Some species also help clean harmful pollutants out of the environment in a process called Bioremediation.
3. They play an essential role in the natural recycling of living material
4. NITROGEN FIXATION: Cycling of nitrogen is another important activity. As plants can't take direct Nitrogen (N2) from the environment, it needs to be fixed.
5. DIGESTION: They regulate the production of an essential vitamin that people need for proper digestion is Vitamin B 12. Fungi are responsible for manufacturing B12.
6. MEDICINES: They are used for medicinal production. One of the most important groups of medicines, antibiotics, is produced by fungi and bacteria.
7. SEWAGE TREATMENT: They are also used to breakdown sewage and other toxic wastes into safe matter.
8. FERMENTATION: They (Bacteria) help in fermentation which helps in making different forms of dairy products from milk like curd, buttermilk, butter, cheese.
9. ORGANIC ACIDS are commercially prepared using Fungi such as Rhizopus, Penicillium that are used to ferment substrates such as fruits and sugar-containing syrups.
E.g acetic acid, citric acid, gluconic acid, fumaric acid and lactic acid.
10. Microorganisms play a significant role in maintaining the fertility of the soil. They help in composting process which forms Manure. They aerate and enrich the soil with nitrates and other nutrients.
11. RESEARCH: Many labs use bacteria, fungi and especially viruses for research studies. Non- virulent forms of these microorganisms are injected into subjects which go through clinical trials as it would help in future development of medicines, vaccinations and cure for diseases.
