Answer:

Soil is the naturally occurring minerals and decomposed plant matter that make up the ground’s surface. The Natural Resources Conservation Service defines soil as “a natural body comprised of solids (minerals and organic matter), liquid, and gases that occurs on the land surface…”

Explanation:

                                                 Uses of Soil

Agriculture:

Soil is fertile and has the vital nutrients needed to support plant growth for human and animal needs like food and clothing.

Medicinal:

Soils can be used to make medicine. There are organisms called microbes which are created in the soil.

Cosmetic Products:

Everyday cosmetic products women use is made from soil, examples are foundation, blush and facial masks.

Waste Decay:

Soil layers help in decaying waste and harmful pollutants. This is necessary otherwise we would have land full of dead animals, plants and human bodies

Pottery:

Clay soil is used to make pottery and ceramics. When mixed with water and due to its compact nature one can mold the clay soil into pots, bowls, plates etc.

Building:

Soil can be used to build. A lot of building materials can be made from soil (bricks etc). It is also mixed with cement to offer support since it is compact and can hold material.

Water holding in aquifers:

Aquifers move water underground to provide moisture to nearby crops. One of the sustainable uses of soil is to help water seep into aquifers and hold it there.

The Soil Nitrogen Cycle:

The soil nitrogen cycle helps to maintain and balance life in the Earth’s ecosystem. Without this cycle, many plants would die, and bodies of water could become toxic from the excess of nitrogen.

Gardening with Soil:

The role of soil in plant growth is irreplaceable. Soil provides nutrients and water to the plants, and it acts as a layer of protection for delicate parts of stems and roots.

Soil Carbon Storage:

A vital part of the agricultural uses of soil is carbon storage. The carbon in the soil helps with water-retention and overall fertility.
