Jhum or Jhoom cultivation is a local name for slash and burn agriculture practiced by the tribal groups in the northeastern states of India like Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland and also in the districts of Bangladesh like Khagrachari and Sylhet. This system involves clearing a piece..piece of land by setting fire or clear felling and using the area for growing crops of agricultural importance such as upland rice, vegetables or fruits. jhum cultivation can also be said as shifting cultivation.. This was done on small patches of land mostly in forest . The cultivators cut the treetops to allow sunlight to reach the ground and burnt the vegetation on the land to clear it for cultivation. They spread the Ash from the firing which contained potash to fertile the soil. they use the axe to cut trees and the ho to scratch the soil in order to prepare it for cultivation .They broadcast the seeds that scatter the seeds on the field instead of ploughing the land and sowing the seeds . Once the crop was ready and harvested they moved to another field and a field that had been cultivated once was left falllow off for several years...

Shifting cultivators were found in hilly and forested tracks for North East and Central India the lives of these tribal people depended on free movement within forest on being able to use the land and forests for growing their crops. that is only way they could practice shifting cultivation.
