Without a doubt, I think the statement or “slogan” of Gandhi’s which is most often quoted is this: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” However, scholars question whether he actually said this or not, and most believe that he did not.
When I discuss Gandhi after presentations of our PBS documentaries on him, “Gandhi’s Gift” and “Gandhi’s Awakening,” I always say: “If he didn’t say it, he certainly meant it.” The statement is an encapsulation of his philosophy, whether he said it in that way or not.
His belief was that you—wherever you are and whoever you are—do not need to wait for positive change to occur, but that by taking steps toward that action or “being the change,” you are promoting that positive change to occur. Yes, we are oppressed by systems and structures of injustice and conflict, but we don’t have to accept them. Rather, we can begin to make positive changes in our own personal and communal spheres, and those will ripple out into the larger spheres and we will inspire others to join in your actions. Ultimately, those grass-roots personal steps will make those systems and structures irrelevant and crumble. . .because we and others have changed them from the grass-roots upward.
This is a very hopeful philosophy and practice because it allows anyone, anywhere to begin to change something she or he finds unacceptable or unethical. It allows that person to do something and not sit around waiting, feeling anger or self-pity or useless or as if one is victimized. It is a very democratic practice because it is accessible to everyone.
Another very popular statement of Gandhi’s is the one he said to a group of young people who called themselves the Peace Brigade (Shanti Sena) when they asked him near the end of his life to give them a message. He said simply and profoundly: “My life is my message.”
This is an amazing statement, I believe, and inspirational because he was telling the young people: “if you want to know what I stand for, look at the actions of my life.” It is another way of saying the old maxim, “Actions speak louder than words.” In my view, his statement is wise and true, especially because he took great pains to model his philosophy and practices for all to see, learn from, be inspired by and adopt.
He was always very transparent in his actions because he knew others would witness his nonviolent methods then adopt them. . .not because he practiced them, but because he knew they were the Truth. Thus, as he also said, “out of my ashes a thousand Gandhis will arise.”
His philosophy and methods seem especially relevant and hopeful for the times we are in now. . .Gandhi could be more relevant now than ever before!
