Reactants:

  • Lead nitrate [Pb(NO3)2]

Products:

  • Lead oxide (PbO)
  • Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
  • Oxygen (O2)

Balanced chemical reaction:

{ \boxed{ \rm{2Pb(NO_3)_2(s) \xrightarrow{ \triangle} 2PbO(s) + 4NO_2(g) + O_2(g)}}}

Solid lead nitrate decomposes on heating to give out brown fumes or vapours of NO2 and also a yellow residue known as Lead oxide along with oxygen gas.

Here, we can see that heat was required to lead this reaction. Hence, absorption of heat took place. These type of reactions are known as Thermal decomposition reaction because of the requirement of heat and decomposition of Solid Lead nitrate.

There are many types of reactions and decomposition reaction is one of those reactions. Here, the reactant is broken down or decomposed into two or more simple compounds or elements. This can done by using electricity, heat or light. Hence, there are 3 types of decomposition reaction:

  • Thermal decomposition reaction☀️
  • Electro-decomposition reaction⚡
  • Photo decomposition reaction⭐
