Annie Besant was a British socialist, theosophist, women's rights activist, writer, orator, educationist, and philanthropist. Regarded as a champion of human freedom, she was an ardent supporter of both Irish and Indian self-rule. She was a prolific author with over three hundred books and pamphlets to her credit. Annie Besant founded Home Rule League in India in 1916.
During her stint as a member of the society, she became attracted to Hinduism and its spiritual ideals. With the aim of preaching the ideals of the Theosophical Society, she came to India in 1893.
