She wasn’t the oldest (I had always thought she was). There was one born before her. A boy. A stillborn. Boys were favored over girls back then—but the stillborn led her parents to believe that having a boy was bad luck.
In Hong Kong, her grade school teacher had accused [my mom] of stealing money from her desk: it must have been her, the teacher accused, for she was the poorest of the students.
My Grade 8 Biography Assignment on My Mother
(My mom has stored it in her keepsake box all these years.)
These were details I had not known about my mom until my eighth-grade teacher had given us an assignment to write a biography on a family member. Introverted, my mom rarely volunteered details about her personal life. But my school project had launched a series of conversations with my mother, childhood tales that became surprising discoveries for me. The project unearthed stories that would have otherwise remained buried (merci, Mme. Dufault!).
I teach the writing classes at my homeschool co-operative. One of the beauties of running a co-op with other godly, gifted, and passionate mothers is the freedom to teach classes that we believe will be of great value to our children. This spring, I proposed a Biography Writing class for the grades fives and sixes; all the mothers eagerly jumped on board.
I decided that while teaching the eight-week class, I would personally do the assignment along with the students—on my 90-year-old paternal grandpa. The kids were required to spend two weeks interviewing their chosen family member. Three times I met up with my grandpa, asking him questions about his past, over delicious dim sum. (I need more meetings with him to complete my biography, which is one of my goals for this summer.)
Last year, I bought a portable recorder for my grandpa for his birthday, asking if he would record his stories during his free time. I said I would turn these stories into a book. I was later told the recorder was too ‘formal’ a device for him, for he froze whenever it was on.

The family member who inspires me is my DAD. He thought me how to be good towards society even if they are bad. He thought me to work hard and the success will come by its own. He even said that there isn't any thing such as IMPOSSIBLE everything is POSSIBLE if we work with determination and dedication
