Bama, popularly known as Karukku Bama, was born in 1958 in a Tamil family. Being a multi-faceted person, she juggled multiple roles- of a teacher, a social activist and most importantly a renowned writer. She wrote used the pen name Faustina Mary Fatima Rani to express her thoughts and reach out to people. Her famous novels- Karukku, Sangati and Vanman, have been translated into numerous languages, including various Indian languages, English as well as French. She has twenty short stories to her credit too, but they have not been published as a compilation. Karukku, Bama’s semi-fictional autobiography won her the Crossword Award, which can be seen as a recognition of the strength of her writing and personality. She is known to have remarkable traits like unshakeable conviction and the courage to stand by her ideology.
