In the realm of Hindi poetry, Kunwar Narayan marks his presence as one of the leading Hindi poets of the 21st century. With a career spanning more than 60 years, he's essentially associated with the 'new poetry movement' in Hindi. Narayan was born in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh in 1927 and his literary influence has a wide spectrum, from mythology, great epics or Upanishads to Amir Khusro, Ghalib, Marxism, and Gandhi. Narayan was a resident of Lucknow and his house was a center of the literary meet as well as classical performances till his death in 2017. Apart from poems, his literary genius flourished through essays, short stories, translation works, literary criticism etc. During his early life, he translated poems of French symbolist poets, such as Valery, Mallarmé along with Cavafy and Borges. Amongst his poems, most famous ones are, 'Chakravyuh'(1956), 'Parivesh: Hum-Tum', 'Atmajayee' (short epic based poetry), 'Apne Sapne', 'Koi Dusra Nahi'(1993), 'In Dino'(2008). 'Atmajayee' is a epic poetry on Upanishad-character Nachiketa and is one of the classics of Hindi poetry expressing metaphysical concerns. 'Apne Sapne' has a content of political and social ironies. Narayan was awarded the Sahitya Akademi award in 1995 for 'Koi Dusra Nehin' and overall contribution to Hindi literature. He was always conferred with the highest literature award of India, Jnanpith in 2005 as well as Italy's Premio Feronia award for being an esteemed global author (first Indian author to get that award).
