Jerome wrote Three Men in a Boat in first person with himself as a narrator. The style is simple, matter-of-fact but highly humourous for its tongue in cheek manner of expressing himself. The entire text is loaded with irony and various examples that tickle one's funny bone. However, it cannot be denied that the author has at the same time attempted to impart some information on the history of England along with some useful precautions to take when sailing on a river.
