Mrs. Edith Frank is Anne Frank's mother. She is a woman belonging to the old school of mothers who believed in strict discipline. As a result, she was in perpetual conflict with the mischievous and hyperactive Anne. Her elder daughter Margot was more to her liking and so her favourite. Margot was intelligent and bright but at the same time more sober than Anne.

Mrs. Frank could not stand the pretentious and foolish Mrs. Van Dan. While Mrs. Van Dan was of the opinion that the Frank girls were not properly brought up, Mrs. Frank always justified their up bringing. Unlike Mrs. Van Dan who went berserk at the slightest indication of danger, Mrs. Frank always acted more calmly in the Secret Annex.

All the same, she was not above retaliating Mrs. Van Dan's petty selfishness. When she hid some of her utensils so that she can use the Frank's, Mrs. Frank saw to that she also hid some of her own.

But Anne, like any other little girl believed that her mother did not love her and was partial to her sister because she was more beautiful and brighter than herself. Ann did not like her mother criticizing her every action. In that way, Mrs. Frank failed to understand her daughter's need for support and love. When Anne refused to pray with her, she was hurt. This shows that she did love her daughter.

On the whole, Mrs. Edith Frank was an ordinary woman who had shades of grey in her character. This helped Anne to change her attitude towards her mother when she was a little more grown up.
