Princess September is very emotional, greatly distraught by the death of her parrot, and extremely delighted by the charming songs of the nightingale. She wishes to share her joy by showing off her nightingale to her sisters, not suspecting that they are petty and will become "vexed" and envious by the charming bird. When her bird tells Princess September of his unhappiness in being caged, she utters a little sob. Finally, this princess is not selfish like her sisters, and, loving the little bird, she gives him freedom even though it means risking the loss of his delightful presence. It is very difficult to put the happiness of someone she loves before her own, but Princess September does this, nevertheless.
At first the princess follows the advice of the petty sisters who suggest "Safety first" by caging the little nightingale so that she can enjoy his pretty songs.  But, she later realizes that her decision was unjust because the nightingale is unhappy and wants to die if he cannot be free. Because she loves the little bird, she wisely risks losing him and releases him from the cage. Princess September makes a just decision because she is rewarded with the love of the nightingale who then lives.
Unlike her selfish sisters, Princess September loves the nightingale and delights in its affection for her as, seeing her unhappiness, it asks if she wants it to replace her parrot. It is only because the older sisters trick her by acting concerned that the bird will not be "safe," that the princess cages him. Instead, she is motivated by love to release him.
