The short narrative "A Pair of Mustaches" follows the fortunes of Seth Ramanand, the protagonist, and Khan Azam Khan, his antagonist. While Khan sports a moustache appropriate for his social level, Seth Ramanand closely resembles Khan in this regard. Thus, he usurps authority. Both characters are satirised, one because he sports a moustache that he is no longer eligible for (having become destitute and impoverished) and the other because he compares his moustache to that of a different class to which he is not entitled. Anand uses tremendous economy and succinctness in his characterisation to clearly conjure the environment.
