Preamble to the Constitution of India is a brief introductory statement that sets out the guiding purpose and principles of the document, and it indicates the source from which the document derives its authority, meaning, the people.[1] The hopes and aspirations of the people as well as the ideals before our nation are described in the preamble in clear words. It may be considered as the heart and soul of Constitution. The preamble can be referred to as the preface which highlights the entire Constitution. It was adopted on 26 November 1949 by the Constituent Assembly and came into effect on 26th January,1950

The Preamble of the Constitution describes India as the Socialist state. The debate now arises whether 'India still abides by the socialist ideals set out in the preamble' or not.

The arguments in favor include :

1.  The big industries and companies are still under the control of government.

2.  Resources of the nation are under the control of government.

3.  We see many quota, licenses, permits, price controls, restrictive labour laws, progressive tax slabs are under the control of state.

4.  Business and markets are closely under the surveillance of state.

5.  Directive Principles of state Policy which are socialist in nature are more focused now.

The arguments in against include :

1.  Now a trend of privatization of big industries started.

2.  Even public supplies like electricity are being privatized now.

3.  India's half of wealth is concentrated in few hands like Ambanis, Tatas etc.

4.  Market is open and foreign investment is more being focused now.

5.  Government now-a-days supports industrialists more and more.
