There is a watchman in every village. He is a useful member of society and an important government servant. He has got a register to keep a regular record of all births and deaths in it. He mixes with the people and remains in touch with the police. He sends weekly reports, to the officers concerned, about the village and its people. If there is a theft, a fight or a murder, is responsible for maintaining law and order in his village. He keeps awake all the night, stick in one hand and a lantern in the other. Sometimes, he is followed by his faithful dog. He stands in constant danger of being attacked b thieves or robbers. He wears a khaki uniform and ties a blue turban on his head. He is the guardian of the life and property of every villager. But his salary is very small. Nevertheless, he leads a contented life.
